Q61

The approximate distance between the capital of Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal) and the capital of Maharashtra (Mumbai) is 756 km. If a train covers this distance in nearly 14 hours, the average speed of the train in metre per second is

  1. (1) 900 m/s
  2. (2) 15 m/sCorrect answer
  3. (3) 30 m/s
  4. (4) 54 m/s

Solution.

CBSE answer: (2)

Answer: (2) 15 m/s

  1. Average speed = distance ÷ time = 756÷14=54756 \div 14 = 54 km/h.
  2. To change km/h into m/s, multiply by 518\frac{5}{18}: 54×518=1554 \times \frac{5}{18} = 15 m/s.
  3. Check: 756000 m÷(14×3600 s)=756000÷50400=15756000 \text{ m} \div (14 \times 3600 \text{ s}) = 756000 \div 50400 = 15 m/s.

Trap: 54 is the speed in km/h, not in m/s.
