Topic: Analytical geometry

Q55

ABCABC is an equilateral triangle and ADAD is the altitude on BCBC. If the coordinates of AA are (1,2)(1,2) and that of DD are (−2,6)( - 2,6), then what is the equation of BCBC?

  1. (a) 3x+4y−18=03x + 4y - 18 = 0
  2. (b) 4x+3y−1=04x + 3y - 1 = 0
  3. (c) 4x−3y+26=04x - 3y + 26 = 0
  4. (d) 3x−4y+30=03x - 4y + 30 = 0Correct answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) 3x−4y+30=03x - 4y + 30 = 0

  1. An altitude is perpendicular to the opposite side.
  2. The vector DA→=(3,−4)\overrightarrow{DA} = (3, - 4) is therefore a normal to BCBC.
  3. The line through D=(−2,6)D = ( - 2,6) with this normal is 3(x+2)−4(y−6)=03(x + 2) - 4(y - 6) = 0, or 3x−4y+30=03x - 4y + 30 = 0.
