Topic: Analytical geometry

Q56

What is the equation of the circle whose diameter is 10 cm and the equations of two of its diameters are x+y=0x + y = 0 and x−y=0x - y = 0?

  1. (a) x2+y2=1x^{2} + y^{2} = 1
  2. (b) x2+y2=25x^{2} + y^{2} = 25Correct answer
  3. (c) x2+y2=100x^{2} + y^{2} = 100
  4. (d) x2+y2−2x−2y−23=0x^{2} + y^{2} - 2x - 2y - 23 = 0

Solution.

Answer: (b) x2+y2=25x^{2} + y^{2} = 25

  1. The centre is the intersection of the two diameter lines.
  2. Solving x+y=0x + y = 0 and x−y=0x - y = 0 gives (0,0)(0,0).
  3. The radius is 10/2=510/2 = 5 cm, so the equation is x2+y2=25x^{2} + y^{2} = 25.
