Topic: Analytical geometry

Q54

Let A(3,−1)A(3, - 1) and B(1,1)B(1,1) be the end points of line segment ABAB. Let PP be the middle point of the line segment ABAB. Let QQ be the point situated at a distance 2\sqrt{2} units from PP on the perpendicular bisector line of ABAB. What are the possible coordinates of QQ?

  1. (a) (2,1)(2,1)
  2. (b) (3,1)(3,1)Correct answer
  3. (c) (2,2)(2,2)
  4. (d) (1,3)(1,3)

Solution.

Answer: (b) (3,1)(3,1)

  1. The midpoint is P=(2,0)P = (2,0).
  2. Since the slope of ABAB is −1- 1, its perpendicular bisector has slope 1 and equation y=x−2y = x - 2.
  3. A displacement (t,t)(t,t) from PP has length 2∣t∣\sqrt{2}|t|.
  4. Hence t=±1t = \pm 1, giving Q=(3,1)Q = (3,1) or (1,−1)(1, - 1).
  5. Only (3,1)(3,1) appears among the choices.
