Q7

Convert from direct speech to indirect speech:

Nitin said to his brother, “What a beautiful painting it is ?”

  1. (a) Nitin wondered to his brother that what a beautiful painting it was
  2. (b) Nitin wondered before his brother that it was a beautiful painting
  3. (c) Nitin exclaimed that it is a beautiful paintingCorrect answer
  4. (d) Nitin asked his brother whether it was beautiful painting

Solution.

Answer: (c) Nitin exclaimed that it is a beautiful painting

  1. "What a beautiful painting it is" is an exclamation of admiration, so the reporting verb becomes "exclaimed".
  2. The exclamatory "What a" becomes a plain statement: "that it is a beautiful painting".
  3. (a) keeps "what a" after "that", (b) uses the wrong verb "wondered before", and (d) turns admiration into a question.

Trap: The sentence ends with a question mark, but it is an exclamation; and "is" stays because the painting is still beautiful when the words are reported.
