Q52

While giving a rectangular page to Mohan, Mathematics teacher told him to make a square out of it. Mohan folded that paper from one side and made a square. At what level of Van Heile’s theory of geometrical understanding Mohan is ?

  1. (1) Level 2 (Relationship)Correct answer
  2. (2) Level 1 (Analysis)
  3. (3) Level 0 (Visualisation)
  4. (4) Level 3 (Deduction)

Solution.

CBSE answer: (1)

Answer: (1) Level 2 (Relationship)

  1. Mohan is not only listing the properties of one shape; he turns a rectangle into a square.
  2. To do that he must see how the two shapes are related: a square is a rectangle whose adjacent sides are also equal.
  3. So he keeps the right angles and folds until the sides match, moving from one figure to the other.
  4. Seeing links between figures and their properties is Van Hiele Level 2, informal deduction (relationships).

Trap: (2) Level 1 also uses properties such as equal sides, but only within one shape, not between shapes.
