Q66

Consider the following statements about beehives :
A. Every beehive has only one queen bee that lays eggs.
B. There are a few males in the hive who make the hive.
C. The number of females is much more than the males in the hive. These female bees are the worker bees who work all day. They also look after the baby bees.
D. The worker bees fly around flowers in search of nectar for honey. On finding flowers with nectar, they do a special kind of dance by which other bees also join them to collect the nectar.
The correct statements are

  1. (1) A and B
  2. (2) A, B and C
  3. (3) A, C and D
  4. (4) A and DCorrect answer

Solution.

CBSE answer: (4)

Answer: (4) A and D

  1. A is true: each hive has a single queen, and she alone lays the eggs.
  2. D is true: a worker that finds nectar does a special dance, and other bees follow it to the flowers.
  3. B is false: the few male bees do not build the hive; worker bees do that.
  4. On the strictest reading, C is set aside because the queen is also a female, so not every female in the hive is a worker.
Our note

Note: C matches the Class IV NCERT chapter 'Anita and the Honeybees' and is true, so A, C and D (option 3) is the better answer.
