CTET 7 Feb 2026 Paper 1, Question 56

Topic: Children's errors in maths

Q56

A child writes five hundred three as 5003. It shows that

  1. (1) the child needs to learn counting
  2. (2) the child does not know how to write numbers in words
  3. (3) the child does not know the concept of place valueCorrect answer
  4. (4) the child needs to learn recognition of digits

Solution.

CBSE answer: (3)

Answer: (3) the child does not know the concept of place value

  1. The child writes 500 for 'five hundred' and then adds 3 at the end, giving 5003.
  2. This shows the child writes each spoken part separately instead of placing 3 in the ones place of 500.
  3. The digits and the counting are fine, so the gap is in place value.

Trap: the error is in writing the number in digits, not in writing it in words, so (2) does not fit.
