Which of the following is not an expected learning outcome for class III as per NCERT recommendations?

  1. (1) Is 15×415 \times 4 equal to 4×154 \times 15?
  2. (2) Solve 12÷13\frac{1}{2} \div \frac{1}{3}.Correct answer
  3. (3) Extend the sequence A, DE, HIJ, _____ .
  4. (4) There are 12 balls in a box. How many balls will be there in 5 such boxes?

Solution.

CBSE answer: (2)

Answer: (2) Solve 12÷13\frac{1}{2} \div \frac{1}{3}.

  1. Class III outcomes include multiplication as repeated addition (12 balls in 5 boxes), patterns (A, DE, HIJ) and noticing that order does not change a product (15×4=4×1515 \times 4 = 4 \times 15).
  2. In class III, fractions are met only as half, quarter and three-fourths of a whole.
  3. Division of one fraction by another comes much later, in the upper primary classes.
  4. So (2) is not expected in class III.
