NDA 1 2025 Maths, question 74

Topic: Differential calculus

Passage · Q73 to Q74

Let ABCABC be a triangle right-angled at BB and AB+AC=3AB + AC = 3 units.

Q74

What is the maximum area of the triangle?

  1. (a) 3/2\sqrt{3}/2 square unitCorrect answer
  2. (b) 3\sqrt{3} square units
  3. (c) 6/2\sqrt{6}/2 square units
  4. (d) 6\sqrt{6} square units

Solution.

Answer: (a) 3/2\sqrt{3}/2 square unit

  1. With AB=uAB = u, the area squared is K2=u2(9−6u)/4K^{2} = u^{2}(9 - 6u)/4.
  2. It is maximised at u=1u = 1, so AB=1AB = 1, AC=2AC = 2 and BC=3BC = \sqrt{3}.
  3. Therefore Kmax⁡=12AB⋅BC=3/2K_{\max} = \frac{1}{2}AB \cdot BC = \sqrt{3}/2 square unit.
