NDA 1 2025 Maths, question 73

Topic: Differential calculus

Passage · Q73 to Q74

Let ABCABC be a triangle right-angled at BB and AB+AC=3AB + AC = 3 units.

Q73

What is ∠A\angle A equal to if the area of the triangle is maximum?

  1. (a) π/6\pi/6
  2. (b) π/4\pi/4
  3. (c) π/3\pi/3Correct answer
  4. (d) 5π/125\pi/12

Solution.

Answer: (c) π/3\pi/3

  1. Let AB=uAB = u and AC=3−uAC = 3 - u. By Pythagoras, BC=(3−u)2−u2=9−6uBC = \sqrt{(3 - u)^{2} - u^{2}} = \sqrt{9 - 6u}, with 0<u<3/20 < u < 3/2.
  2. If the area is KK, then 4K2=u2(9−6u)4K^{2} = u^{2}(9 - 6u).
  3. Its derivative is 18u(1−u)18u(1 - u), positive before u=1u = 1 and negative after it.
  4. Thus the maximum occurs at AB=1AB = 1, AC=2AC = 2.
  5. Hence cos⁡A=AB/AC=1/2\cos A = AB/AC = 1/2, so A=π/3A = \pi/3.
