Q64

If a line x+1p=y−1q=z−2r\frac{x + 1}{p} = \frac{y - 1}{q} = \frac{z - 2}{r}, where p=2q=3rp = 2q = 3r, makes an angle θ\theta with the positive direction of yy-axis, then what is cos⁡2θ\cos 2\theta equal to?

  1. (a) −31/49- 31/49Correct answer
  2. (b) −37/49- 37/49
  3. (c) 31/4931/49
  4. (d) 37/4937/49

Solution.

Answer: (a) −31/49- 31/49

  1. The direction ratios are proportional to (6,3,2)(6,3,2).
  2. Thus cos⁡2θ=32/(62+32+22)=9/49\cos^{2}\theta = 3^{2}/\left( 6^{2} + 3^{2} + 2^{2} \right) = 9/49.
  3. Consequently cos⁡2θ=2cos⁡2θ−1=18/49−1=−31/49\cos 2\theta = 2\cos^{2}\theta - 1 = 18/49 - 1 = - 31/49.
