Topic: Analytical geometry

Q63

ABCABC is a triangle right-angled at BB. If A(k,1,−1)A(k,1, - 1), B(2k,0,2)B(2k,0,2) and C(2+2k,k,1)C(2 + 2k,k,1) are the vertices of the triangle, then what is the value of kk?

  1. (a) −3- 3
  2. (b) −1- 1
  3. (c) 11
  4. (d) 33Correct answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) 33

  1. Perpendicular sides at BB require BA→⋅BC→=0\overrightarrow{BA} \cdot \overrightarrow{BC} = 0.
  2. Here BA→=(−k,1,−3)\overrightarrow{BA} = ( - k,1, - 3) and BC→=(2,k,−1)\overrightarrow{BC} = (2,k, - 1).
  3. The dot product is −2k+k+3=3−k- 2k + k + 3 = 3 - k.
  4. Hence k=3k = 3.
