Topic: Algebra

Q5

If 5th, 7th and 13th terms of an AP are in GP, then what is the ratio of its first term to its common difference?

  1. (a) -3Correct answer
  2. (b) -2
  3. (c) 2
  4. (d) 3

Solution.

Answer: (a) -3

  1. Write the first term as aa and common difference as dd.
  2. The three terms are a+4da + 4d, a+6da + 6d and a+12da + 12d.
  3. The GP condition gives (a+6d)2=(a+4d)(a+12d)(a + 6d)^{2} = (a + 4d)(a + 12d).
  4. Expansion and cancellation yield 4d(a+3d)=04d(a + 3d) = 0.
  5. For the requested ratio a/da/d to exist, d≠0d \neq 0, so a/d=−3a/d = - 3.
