Q4

If x+5y=4x + \frac{5}{y} = 4 and y+5x=−4y + \frac{5}{x} = - 4, then what is (x+y)(x + y) equal to?

  1. (a) 0Correct answer
  2. (b) 1
  3. (c) 4
  4. (d) 5

Solution.

Answer: (a) 0

  1. The denominators imply x,y≠0x,y \neq 0.
  2. Multiplying the first equation by yy and the second by xx gives xy+5=4yxy + 5 = 4y and xy+5=−4xxy + 5 = - 4x.
  3. Consequently 4y=−4x4y = - 4x, so x+y=0x + y = 0.
