Q49

If kk is a root of x2−4x+1=0x^{2} - 4x + 1 = 0, then what is tan⁡−1k+tan⁡−1(1/k)\tan^{- 1}k + \tan^{- 1}(1/k) equal to?

  1. (a) −π/2- \pi/2
  2. (b) 00
  3. (c) π/4\pi/4
  4. (d) π/2\pi/2Correct answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) π/2\pi/2

  1. The roots are 2±32 \pm \sqrt{3}, both positive.
  2. For any k>0k > 0, the principal angles tan⁡−1k\tan^{- 1}k and tan⁡−1(1/k)\tan^{- 1}(1/k) are complementary.
  3. Therefore their sum is π/2\pi/2.
  4. Positivity is essential; a negative kk would give −π/2- \pi/2.
