Topic: Trigonometry

Q48

A man at MM, standing 100 m away from the base (P)(P) of a chimney of height 50 m, observes the angle of elevation of the highest point (Q)(Q) of the smoke to be 45∘45^{\circ}. The highest point of the chimney is at RR. Further PP, RR and QQ are in a straight line and the straight line is perpendicular to PMPM. What is the angle RMQRMQ equal to?

  1. (a) tan⁡−1(1/2)\tan^{- 1}(1/2)
  2. (b) tan⁡−1(1/3)\tan^{- 1}(1/3)Correct answer
  3. (c) tan⁡−1(2/3)\tan^{- 1}(2/3)
  4. (d) tan⁡−1(3/4)\tan^{- 1}(3/4)

Solution.

Answer: (b) tan⁡−1(1/3)\tan^{- 1}(1/3)

  1. Let β=∠PMR\beta = \angle PMR.
  2. Then tan⁡β=PR/PM=50/100=1/2\tan\beta = PR/PM = 50/100 = 1/2.
  3. The required angle is 45∘−β45^{\circ} - \beta.
  4. Its tangent is (1−1/2)/(1+1/2)=1/3(1 - 1/2)/(1 + 1/2) = 1/3.
  5. As the angle is acute, ∠RMQ=tan⁡−1(1/3)\angle RMQ = \tan^{- 1}(1/3).
