Q90

Which one of the following latitudes will experience a minimum angle of the Sun’s rays when it is Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere ?

  1. (a) Arctic Circle
  2. (b) Equator
  3. (c) Tropic of Cancer
  4. (d) Tropic of CapricornCorrect answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) Tropic of Capricorn

  1. At the June solstice the solar declination is approximately 23.5∘N{23.5}^{\circ}N.
  2. Comparing local-noon elevations, h=90∘−∣ϕ−23.5∘∣h = 90^{\circ} - \left| \phi - {23.5}^{\circ} \right|.
  3. The elevations are about 47° at the Arctic Circle, 66.5° at the Equator, 90° at the Tropic of Cancer and 43° at the Tropic of Capricorn.
  4. The last is the minimum.
  5. The comparison uses the usual local-noon solar-elevation interpretation of the question.
