Topic: Discourse markers

Directions · Q26 to Q35

Given below are sentences that use discourse markers/expressions to make them complete. Identify the most appropriate discourse marker/expression and mark your answer accordingly in the Answer Sheet:

Q32

Many, ________, hesitate to publicly broach such question for fear of nurturing discrimination.

  1. (a) understandablyCorrect answer
  2. (b) despite
  3. (c) until
  4. (d) of course

Solution.

Answer: (a) understandably

  1. The words after the blank give a reason for the hesitation: fear of nurturing discrimination.
  2. "Understandably" says the hesitation is reasonable for that reason, which fits the sentence best.
  3. "Despite" needs an object and "until" needs a time clause, so neither fits as a standalone marker.

Trap: "Of course" also fits grammatically, but it marks something obvious, while the sentence explains why the hesitation makes sense.
