Q130

A car has an initial velocity of 12 m/s and is brought to rest over a distance of 45 m. The acceleration of the car is

  1. (a) +1.6 m/s2+ 1.6\, m/s^{2}
  2. (b) +3.2 m/s2+ 3.2\, m/s^{2}
  3. (c) −1.6 m/s2- 1.6\, m/s^{2}Correct answer
  4. (d) −0.8 m/s2- 0.8\, m/s^{2}

Solution.

Answer: (c) −1.6 m/s2- 1.6\, m/s^{2}

  1. For uniform acceleration, v2=u2+2asv^{2} = u^{2} + 2as.
  2. With v=0v = 0, u=12 m/su = 12\, m/s and s=45 ms = 45\, m,
  3. a=(0−122)/(2×45)=−1.6 m/s2a = \left( 0 - 12^{2} \right)/(2 \times 45) = - 1.6\, m/s^{2}.
  4. The negative sign shows that acceleration opposes the initial motion.
