Q23

If I were you

  1. (a) I shouldn’t buy that dress
  2. (b) I wouldn’t buy that dressCorrect answer
  3. (c) I weren’t buying that dress
  4. (d) I mustn’t buying that dress

Solution.

Answer: (b) I wouldn’t buy that dress

  1. "If I were you" gives advice through an imagined condition, so the main clause uses "would": "I wouldn't buy that dress".
  2. (c) and (d) are ungrammatical: "weren't buying" and "mustn't buying" cannot follow here.

Trap: (a) "I shouldn't" is also used after "If I were you" in formal British English; "would" is the standard modern form.
