Topic: Biology

Q81

In the human digestive system, which one among the following is the role of the pancreas ?

  1. (a) Secretion of surfactants to break up lipid droplets
  2. (b) Storage and regulated release of bile
  3. (c) Secretion of lipase, amylase and proteaseCorrect answer
  4. (d) Neutralizing stomach acids

Solution.

Answer: (c) Secretion of lipase, amylase and protease

  1. The pancreas makes the main digestive enzymes: lipase for fats, amylase for starch and proteases for proteins.
  2. Bile is made by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, which rules out (a) and (b).

Trap: The pancreas also releases bicarbonate that neutralises stomach acid, but its distinctive role in digestion is making these enzymes.
