Answer: (1) or (4)

  1. Assimilation means fitting new information into a schema the child already has, without changing that schema.
  2. (1) fits: the dog and the cat are both placed in the child's existing 'animal' category.
  3. (4) can also be read this way: the new word is simply attached to an object the child already knows.
  4. The Hindi stem prints 'samayojan', the usual Hindi word for accommodation, while the English stem asks about assimilation, so both readings are accepted.

Trap: (2) and (3) are new skills that need new schemas, which is accommodation.
