Topic: Environment and conservation

Q75

Given below are two statements, one marked as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R). Read the statements and choose the correct option.
Assertion (A) : Solar energy and Tidal energy are called renewable energy sources.
Reason (R) : Non-renewable energy sources take thousands of years to be renewed.

  1. (1) Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).
  2. (2) Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).Correct answer
  3. (3) (A) is true, but (R) is false.
  4. (4) (A) is false, but (R) is true.

Solution.

CBSE answer: (2)

Answer: (2) Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)

  1. A is true: sunlight and tides are replaced by nature again and again, so they are renewable.
  2. R is true: coal and petroleum take a very long time to form again, so they cannot be renewed in a human lifetime.
  3. The split into renewable and non-renewable rests on this time to renew; R states that test, so it is read as the reason A's sources count as renewable.

Trap: option (1) is tempting because R talks only about non-renewable sources, but the time to renew is exactly what makes solar and tidal energy renewable.
