Topic: Vygotsky

Q1

Given below are two statements, one marked as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R). Read the statements and choose the correct option.
Assertion (A) : At any age, the teacher should focus on what the child cannot do rather than what they can do with help or support.
Reason (R) : Lev Vygotsky proposed that learning should include only those behaviours that the child can do independently.

  1. (1) Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).
  2. (2) (A) is true, but (R) false.
  3. (3) Both (A) and (R) are false.Correct answer
  4. (4) Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

Solution.

CBSE answer: (3)

Answer: (3) Both (A) and (R) are false.

  1. (A) is false: a teacher should build on what the child can already do and what the child can do with support, not dwell on deficits.
  2. (R) is false: Vygotsky stressed the zone of proximal development, the tasks a child manages only with help from an adult or a more capable peer.
  3. So learning is not limited to independent behaviour.

Trap: (2) treats the deficit focus in (A) as sound pedagogy.
