Q80

A shopkeeper employs a delivery boy and gives him a motorcycle for home delivery. For every delivery, the boy is given ₹ 5. At the end of the day, he also gets ₹ 2 for every kilometre of the distance covered in the day. The boy wants to earn more than ₹ 500 a day, but does not want to travel more than 100 km. Which of the following numbers of deliveries would definitely meet his target?

  1. (a) 80
  2. (b) 85
  3. (c) 90
  4. (d) The question cannot be answered due to insufficient dataCorrect answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) The question cannot be answered due to insufficient data

  1. For nn deliveries covering a total distance of dd km (where 0<d≤1000 < d \le 100), the delivery boy's daily earnings are 5n+2d5n + 2d rupees.
  2. Even for the largest listed option n=90n = 90, his delivery fee is 5×90=4505 \times 90 = 450 rupees, so his total earnings 450+2d450 + 2d exceed 500500 rupees only if d>25d > 25 km.
  3. Because the distance per delivery (or minimum distance travelled) is not given, none of 80,85,80, 85, or 9090 deliveries definitely guarantees earnings above ₹500500.
