Q79

There are two chemicals which do not react with each other. A container contains 10 litres of the chemical AA. One litre of this chemical is removed from it and one litre of the chemical BB is poured. Then one litre of the mixture is removed from the container and one litre of BB is poured. If this process of replacing one litre of the mixture by one litre of BB is performed once more, then what is the volume of BB that is present in the container approximately (in percentage)?

  1. (a) 25
  2. (b) 27Correct answer
  3. (c) 29
  4. (d) 31

Solution.

Answer: (b) 27

  1. Starting with 1010 litres of chemical AA, each replacement of 11 litre removes 110\frac{1}{10} of the existing chemical AA, multiplying the volume of AA by 0.90.9.
  2. After 33 replacements, the volume of chemical AA remaining is 10×(0.9)3=7.2910 \times (0.9)^3 = 7.29 litres, so the volume of chemical BB present is 10−7.29=2.7110 - 7.29 = 2.71 litres.
  3. As a percentage of the 1010-litre container, chemical BB is 2.7110×100%=27.1%≈27%\frac{2.71}{10} \times 100\% = 27.1\% \approx 27\%.
