UPSC Prelims 2026 CSAT, question 36

Topic: Logical reasoning

Q36

There are four statements X,Y,ZX,Y,Z and WW. Their relations are as follows :

If XX is incorrect, then so is ZZ; if YY is incorrect, then WW is correct; if WW is correct, then XX is incorrect.

Which of the following is/are correct?

I. If XX is correct, then so is YY.

II. If ZZ is correct, then it is not necessary that YY is correct.

Select the answer using the code given below.

  1. (a) I onlyCorrect answer
  2. (b) II only
  3. (c) Both I and II
  4. (d) Neither I nor II

Solution.

Answer: (a) I only

  1. The given implications are (∼X⇒∼Z)(\sim X \Rightarrow \sim Z), (∼Y⇒W)(\sim Y \Rightarrow W), and (W⇒∼X)(W \Rightarrow \sim X).
  2. Statement I is correct: taking the contrapositives gives Z⇒XZ \Rightarrow X, X⇒∼WX \Rightarrow \sim W, and ∼W⇒Y\sim W \Rightarrow Y, so X⇒YX \Rightarrow Y always holds.
  3. Statement II is incorrect: chaining the implications gives Z⇒X⇒∼W⇒YZ \Rightarrow X \Rightarrow \sim W \Rightarrow Y, so whenever ZZ is correct, YY must necessarily be correct.
