Topic: Arrangements and puzzles

Q35

Seven persons A,B,C,D,E,FA,B,C,D,E,F and GG travel by three cars X,Y,ZX,Y,Z. AA and another two of them travel by XX. Only EE travels with GG. CC travels by ZZ, but BB does not travel by YY. Besides, AA and BB do not travel by the same car. Then which of the following are correct?

I. No one travels alone.

II. Only DD travels with FF.

III. Only CC travels with BB.

Select the answer using the code given below.

  1. (a) I and II only
  2. (b) I and III onlyCorrect answer
  3. (c) II and III only
  4. (d) All the three

Solution.

Answer: (b) I and III only

  1. Car XX carries AA and two others (3 persons); since only EE travels with GG, {E,G}\{E, G\} occupy a car of size 2 alone, and since CC is in ZZ, we have Y={E,G}Y = \{E, G\}.
  2. Because BB is neither in YY nor in the same car as AA (car XX), BB must travel in ZZ with CC, leaving DD and FF to join AA in XX; thus X={A,D,F}X = \{A, D, F\}, Y={E,G}Y = \{E, G\}, and Z={B,C}Z = \{B, C\}.
  3. Statements I and III are correct (no one travels alone, and only CC travels with BB in car ZZ), whereas Statement II is incorrect because AA also travels with DD and FF in car XX.
