UPSC Prelims 2026 CSAT, question 30

Topic: Arithmetic

Q30

Suppose x,yx,y and zz are variables taking positive real numbers as their possible values. It is given that yy is directly proportional to x2x^2 and xx is inversely proportional to zz. For z=725z=\frac{7}{25}, the values of xx and yy are 55 and 5050, respectively. If y=98y=98, what is zz equal to?

  1. (a) 17\frac{1}{7}
  2. (b) 15\frac{1}{5}Correct answer
  3. (c) 57\frac{5}{7}
  4. (d) 11

Solution.

Answer: (b) 15\frac{1}{5}

  1. Since yy is directly proportional to x2x^2 (y=k1x2y = k_1 x^2) and xx is inversely proportional to zz (xz=k2x z = k_2), substituting x=5,y=50x = 5, y = 50 at z=725z = \frac{7}{25} gives k1=5052=2k_1 = \frac{50}{5^2} = 2 and k2=5×725=75k_2 = 5 \times \frac{7}{25} = \frac{7}{5}.
  2. When y=98y = 98, we have 2x2=98⇒x2=49⇒x=72 x^2 = 98 \Rightarrow x^2 = 49 \Rightarrow x = 7 (since x>0x > 0).
  3. Substituting x=7x = 7 into xz=75x z = \frac{7}{5} gives 7z=757 z = \frac{7}{5}, so z=15z = \frac{1}{5}.
