UPSC Prelims 2026 CSAT, question 29

Topic: Number system

Q29

Three variables x,yx,y and zz take values 2,3,42,3,4 or 55 such that their values are always distinct. If MM and NN denote the largest possible value and the smallest possible value, respectively, for the expression (x×y)+z{(x \times y)+z}; then M−NM-N is

  1. (a) 11
  2. (b) 12
  3. (c) 13Correct answer
  4. (d) 14

Solution.

Answer: (c) 13

  1. To maximize (x×y)+z(x \times y) + z for distinct x,y,z∈{2,3,4,5}x, y, z \in \{2, 3, 4, 5\}, choose the two largest numbers for the product and the third largest for zz: M=(5×4)+3=23M = (5 \times 4) + 3 = 23.
  2. To minimize (x×y)+z(x \times y) + z, choose the two smallest numbers for the product and the next smallest for zz: N=(2×3)+4=10N = (2 \times 3) + 4 = 10.
  3. Therefore, M−N=23−10=13M - N = 23 - 10 = 13.
