Topic: World and physical geography

Q77

Consider the following statements :

I. Anadyr in Siberia and Nome in Alaska are a few kilometers from each other, but when people are waking up and getting set for breakfast in these cities, it would be different days.

II. When it is Monday in Anadyr, it is Tuesday in Nome.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. (a) I onlyCorrect answer
  2. (b) II only
  3. (c) Both I and II
  4. (d) Neither I nor II

Solution.

Answer: (a) I only

  1. Statement I is correct: Anadyr in Chukotka (eastern Siberia, Russia) and Nome in Alaska (USA) lie across the Bering Strait separated by the International Date Line, so at the same local morning hour they are on different calendar dates.
  2. Statement II is incorrect: because Anadyr lies west of the International Date Line (UTC+12) and Nome lies east of it (UTC-9), Anadyr is 21 hours ahead of Nome; thus when it is Monday in Anadyr, it is Sunday in Nome, not Tuesday.
