UPSC Prelims 2025 CSAT, question 59

Topic: Arithmetic

Q59

XX can complete one-third of a certain work in 6 days, YY can complete one-third of the same work in 8 days and ZZ can complete three-fourth of the same work in 12 days. All of them work together for nn days and then XX and ZZ quit and YY alone finishes the remaining work in 8238\frac{2}{3} days. What is nn equal to ?

  1. (a) 3
  2. (b) 4Correct answer
  3. (c) 5
  4. (d) 6

Solution.

Answer: (b) 4

  1. XX completes the whole work in 6×3=186 \times 3 = 18 days, YY in 8×3=248 \times 3 = 24 days, and ZZ in 12×43=1612 \times \frac{4}{3} = 16 days.
  2. In 823=2638\frac{2}{3} = \frac{26}{3} days alone, YY completes 26/324=2672=1336\frac{26/3}{24} = \frac{26}{72} = \frac{13}{36} of the work, so all three working together for nn days completed 1−1336=23361 - \frac{13}{36} = \frac{23}{36} of the work.
  3. Their combined daily rate is 118+124+116=8+6+9144=23144\frac{1}{18} + \frac{1}{24} + \frac{1}{16} = \frac{8 + 6 + 9}{144} = \frac{23}{144} of the work per day, so n=23/3623/144=4n = \frac{23/36}{23/144} = 4 days.
