Q39

The sum of the deviations of a set of nn numbers x1,x2,x3,…,xnx_{1},x_{2},x_{3},\ldots,x_{n} measured from 1515 is −90-90 and the sum of the deviations of the same numbers measured from −3-3 is 5454. What is the arithmetic mean ?

  1. (a) 3.253.25
  2. (b) 3.503.50
  3. (c) 3.753.75Correct answer
  4. (d) 4.254.25

Solution.

Answer: (c) 3.753.75

  1. Let S be the total.
  2. The two deviation sums give S−15n=−90S - 15n = - 90 and S+3n=54S + 3n = 54.
  3. Subtracting yields 18n=14418n = 144, so n=8n = 8.
  4. Then S=54−24=30S = 54 - 24 = 30, and the mean is 30/8=3.7530/8 = 3.75.
