Q69

The position vectors of the vertices A,B,CA,B,C and DD of a quadrilateral ABCDABCD are given by 3i^+4j^−2k^3\hat{i}+4\hat{j}-2\hat{k}, 4i^−4j^−3k^4\hat{i}-4\hat{j}-3\hat{k}, 2i^−3j^+2k^2\hat{i}-3\hat{j}+2\hat{k} and 6i^−2j^+k^6\hat{i}-2\hat{j}+\hat{k} respectively. What is the angle between the diagonals ACAC and BDBD of the quadrilateral?

  1. (a) 90∘90^{\circ}Correct answer
  2. (b) 75∘75^{\circ}
  3. (c) 60∘60^{\circ}
  4. (d) 45∘45^{\circ}

Solution.

Answer: (a) 90∘90^{\circ}

  1. AC=C−A=(−1,−7,4) and BD=D−B=(2,2,4).
  2. Their dot product is −2−14+16=0.
  3. Both are nonzero, so the diagonals are perpendicular and the angle is 90°.
