NDA 2 2025 Maths, question 64

Topic: Analytical geometry

Q64

The circle x2+y2−2kx−2ky+k2=0x^{2}+y^{2}-2kx-2ky+k^{2}=0 touches the xx-axis at PP and yy-axis at QQ. What is PQPQ equal to?

  1. (a) 2k\sqrt{2}kCorrect answer
  2. (b) 2k2k
  3. (c) 22k2\sqrt{2}k
  4. (d) 4k4k

Solution.

Answer: (a) 2k\sqrt{2}k

  1. Completing squares: (x−k)2+(y−k)2=k2(x - k)^{2} + (y - k)^{2} = k^{2}, centre (k,k)(k, k), radius kk.
  2. It touches the axes at P(k,0)P(k, 0) and Q(0,k)Q(0, k).
  3. PQ=k2+k2=2kPQ = \sqrt{k^{2} + k^{2}} = \sqrt{2}k.

Trap: Strictly PQ=2∣k∣PQ = \sqrt{2}|k|; the option takes k>0k > 0.
