Q13

If

(1−i1+i)2m(1+i1−i)2n=1(\frac{1-i}{1+i})^{2m}(\frac{1+i}{1-i})^{2n}=1

where i=−1i=\sqrt{-1}, then what is the smallest positive value of (m−n)(m-n)?

  1. (a) 11
  2. (b) 22Correct answer
  3. (c) 44
  4. (d) 88

Solution.

Answer: (b) 22

  1. 1−i1+i=−i\frac{1 - i}{1 + i} = -i and 1+i1−i=i\frac{1 + i}{1 - i} = i.
  2. So the product is (−i)2m(i)2n=(−1)m(−1)n=(−1)m+n=1(-i)^{2m}(i)^{2n} = (-1)^{m}(-1)^{n} = (-1)^{m+n} = 1, which needs m+nm + n even, so m−nm - n is even.
  3. The smallest positive even value is 2, for example m=3m = 3, n=1n = 1.

Trap: This takes mm and nn as integers, as the question intends with powers of ii.
