Topic: Algebra

Q1

If px=qy=rzp^{x}=q^{y}=r^{z}, where x,yx,y and zz are in GP, then consider the following statements :

I. p,qp,q and rr are in AP.

II. ln⁡p,ln⁡q\ln p,\ln q and ln⁡r\ln r are in GP.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. (a) I only
  2. (b) II onlyCorrect answer
  3. (c) Both I and II
  4. (d) Neither I nor II

Solution.

Answer: (b) II only

  1. Let px=qy=rz=kp^{x} = q^{y} = r^{z} = k. Then xln⁡p=yln⁡q=zln⁡r=ln⁡kx\ln p = y\ln q = z\ln r = \ln k.
  2. Since y2=xzy^{2} = xz, we get (ln⁡q)2=(ln⁡p)(ln⁡r)(\ln q)^{2} = (\ln p)(\ln r), so ln⁡p,ln⁡q,ln⁡r\ln p, \ln q, \ln r are in GP: II is correct.
  3. I fails: with x,y,z=1,2,4x, y, z = 1, 2, 4 and p,q,r=16,4,2p, q, r = 16, 4, 2, the condition holds but 16, 4, 2 are not in AP.

Trap: This assumes positive bases and nonzero GP terms, which the question takes for granted.
