Q75

Suppose, a ball of mass MM is thrown upwards from a point AA and it reaches up to the highest point BB and returns back to point AA, which one among the following is correct ?

  1. (a) Kinetic Energy at A=A= Potential Energy at BBCorrect answer
  2. (b) Kinetic Energy at A=A= Potential Energy at AA
  3. (c) Kinetic Energy at B=B= Potential Energy at BB
  4. (d) Kinetic Energy at B=B= Kinetic Energy at AA

Solution.

Answer: (a) Kinetic Energy at A=A= Potential Energy at BB

  1. Take the potential energy at A as zero and ignore air resistance.
  2. At the highest point B the ball stops, so all the kinetic energy it had at A has become potential energy.
  3. So kinetic energy at A equals potential energy at B.

Trap: This holds only when potential energy is measured from A; that choice of zero is the standard one here.
