Q46

It does not look like he is going ________ in his studies than what was predicted by his school principal.

  1. (a) any furtherCorrect answer
  2. (b) further
  3. (c) farther
  4. (d) any farther

Solution.

Answer: (a) any further

  1. In a negative sentence ("It does not look like"), "any further" is the natural way to say no more progress.
  2. "Further" is used for progress or extent, so the "farther" options, which are for physical distance, are out.

Trap: "further" alone in (b) is also grammatical, but after "does not" English normally uses "any further".
