Solution.

Answer: (a) 1 only

  1. The approximate 105°–145° belt lacks direct P waves and also lies within the S-wave shadow.
  2. Direct S waves are absent beyond about 105° because they cannot travel through the liquid outer core, so their shadow is larger than the P-wave shadow.
