NDA 1 2025 Maths, question 9

Topic: Matrices and determinants

Q9

Consider the following statements in respect of the determinant Δ=∣k(k+2)2k+112k+1k+21331∣\Delta = \left| \begin{matrix} k(k + 2) & 2k + 1 & 1 \\ 2k + 1 & k + 2 & 1 \\ 3 & 3 & 1 \end{matrix} \right|.

I. Δ\Delta is positive if k>0k > 0.

II. Δ\Delta is negative if k<0k < 0.

III. Δ\Delta is zero if k=0k = 0.

How many of the statements given above are correct?

  1. (a) None
  2. (b) OneCorrect answer
  3. (c) Two
  4. (d) All three

Solution.

Answer: (b) One

  1. Apply R1→R1−R3R_{1} \rightarrow R_{1} - R_{3} and R2→R2−R3R_{2} \rightarrow R_{2} - R_{3}, then expand along the last column.
  2. This gives Δ=(k2+2k−3)(k−1)−(2k−2)2=(k−1)3\Delta = \left( k^{2} + 2k - 3 \right)(k - 1) - (2k - 2)^{2} = (k - 1)^{3}.
  3. I is false: for example, k=1k = 1 gives zero, not a positive determinant. II is true because k<0k < 0 implies (k−1)3<0(k - 1)^{3} < 0.
  4. III is false since k=0k = 0 gives −1- 1.
  5. Exactly one statement is correct.
