NDA 1 2025 Maths, question 81

Topic: Differential calculus

Passage · Q81 to Q82

Let the function y=(1−cos⁡x)−1y = \left( 1 - \cos x \right)^{- 1}, where x≠2nπx \neq 2n\pi and nn is an integer.

Q81

What is the range of the function?

  1. (a) [0,∞)\lbrack 0,\infty)
  2. (b) [0.5,∞)\lbrack 0.5,\infty)Correct answer
  3. (c) [1,∞)\lbrack 1,\infty)
  4. (d) (−∞,0.5]( - \infty,0.5\rbrack

Solution.

Answer: (b) [0.5,∞)\lbrack 0.5,\infty)

  1. Because −1≤cos⁡x<1- 1 \leq \cos x < 1 on the allowed domain, 0<1−cos⁡x≤20 < 1 - \cos x \leq 2.
  2. Taking reciprocals gives y≥1/2y \geq 1/2.
  3. The minimum 1/21/2 occurs at x=(2n+1)πx = (2n + 1)\pi.
  4. As xx approaches an excluded multiple of 2π2\pi, yy becomes arbitrarily large; every value between is attained.
