Topic: Differential calculus

Passage · Q79 to Q80

Let f(x)={x3,x2<1,x2,x2≥1.f(x) = \left\{ \begin{matrix} x^{3}, & x^{2} < 1, \\ x^{2}, & x^{2} \geq 1. \end{matrix} \right.

Q79

What is lim⁡x→0f′(x)\lim_{x \rightarrow 0}{f\prime(x)} equal to?

  1. (a) 22
  2. (b) 11
  3. (c) 00Correct answer
  4. (d) Limit does not exist

Solution.

Answer: (c) 00

  1. In a neighbourhood of zero, x2<1x^{2} < 1, so f(x)=x3f(x) = x^{3} and f′(x)=3x2f\prime(x) = 3x^{2}.
  2. Therefore lim⁡x→0f′(x)=0\lim_{x \rightarrow 0}{f\prime(x)} = 0.
  3. The behaviour at x=±1x = \pm 1 does not affect this limit.
