NDA 1 2025 Maths, question 76

Topic: Differential calculus

Passage · Q75 to Q76

Let (x+y)p+q=xpyq(x + y)^{p + q} = x^{p}y^{q}, where pp, qq are positive integers.

Q76

If p+q=10p + q = 10, then what is dydx\frac{dy}{dx} equal to?

  1. (a) y/xy/xCorrect answer
  2. (b) xyxy
  3. (c) x10y10x^{10}y^{10}
  4. (d) (y/x)10(y/x)^{10}

Solution.

Answer: (a) y/xy/x

  1. From question 75, dydx=yx\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{y}{x} for any positive integers p,qp, q.
  2. So with p+q=10p + q = 10 the derivative is still y/xy/x.

Trap: The value 10 is a distraction; it does not change the derivative, so (c) and (d), which use 10 as a power, are wrong.
