Q70

Let a→\overrightarrow{a}, b→\overrightarrow{b}, (a→×b→)\left( \overrightarrow{a} \times \overrightarrow{b} \right) be unit vectors. What is (a→⋅b→)\left( \overrightarrow{a} \cdot \overrightarrow{b} \right) equal to?

  1. (a) 00Correct answer
  2. (b) 1/21/2
  3. (c) 11
  4. (d) 33

Solution.

Answer: (a) 00

  1. Use ∣a→×b→∣2+(a→⋅b→)2=∣a→∣2∣b→∣2\left| \overrightarrow{a} \times \overrightarrow{b} \right|^{2} + \left( \overrightarrow{a} \cdot \overrightarrow{b} \right)^{2} = \left| \overrightarrow{a} \right|^{2}\left| \overrightarrow{b} \right|^{2}.
  2. Each given magnitude is 1, so 1+(a→⋅b→)2=11 + \left( \overrightarrow{a} \cdot \overrightarrow{b} \right)^{2} = 1.
  3. Thus a→⋅b→=0\overrightarrow{a} \cdot \overrightarrow{b} = 0: the two vectors are perpendicular.
