Topic: Vectors

Q68

The position vectors of three points AA, BB and CC are a→\overrightarrow{a}, b→\overrightarrow{b} and c→\overrightarrow{c} respectively such that 3a→−4b→+c→=0→3\overrightarrow{a} - 4\overrightarrow{b} + \overrightarrow{c} = \overrightarrow{0}. What is AB:BCAB:BC equal to?

  1. (a) 3:13:1
  2. (b) 1:31:3Correct answer
  3. (c) 3:43:4
  4. (d) 1:41:4

Solution.

Answer: (b) 1:31:3

  1. Rearranging gives c→−b→=3(b→−a→)\overrightarrow{c} - \overrightarrow{b} = 3\left( \overrightarrow{b} - \overrightarrow{a} \right), or BC→=3AB→\overrightarrow{BC} = 3\overrightarrow{AB}.
  2. Therefore the lengths satisfy AB:BC=1:3AB:BC = 1:3.
