Q66

A line makes angles α\alpha, β\beta and γ\gamma with the positive directions of the coordinate axes. If a→=(sin⁡2α)i^+(sin⁡2β)j^+(sin⁡2γ)k^\overrightarrow{a} = \left( \sin^{2}\alpha \right)\widehat{i} + \left( \sin^{2}\beta \right)\widehat{j} + \left( \sin^{2}\gamma \right)\widehat{k} and b→=i^+j^+k^\overrightarrow{b} = \widehat{i} + \widehat{j} + \widehat{k}, then what is a→⋅b→\overrightarrow{a} \cdot \overrightarrow{b} equal to?

  1. (a) −2- 2
  2. (b) −1- 1
  3. (c) 11
  4. (d) 22Correct answer

Solution.

Answer: (d) 22

  1. The dot product is sin⁡2α+sin⁡2β+sin⁡2γ\sin^{2}\alpha + \sin^{2}\beta + \sin^{2}\gamma.
  2. Direction cosines obey cos⁡2α+cos⁡2β+cos⁡2γ=1\cos^{2}\alpha + \cos^{2}\beta + \cos^{2}\gamma = 1.
  3. Therefore the required sum is 3−1=23 - 1 = 2.
