Topic: Analytical geometry

Q61

If a line in 3 dimensions makes angles α\alpha, β\beta and γ\gamma with the positive directions of the coordinate axes, then what is cos⁡(α+β)cos⁡(α−β)\cos(\alpha + \beta)\cos(\alpha - \beta) equal to?

  1. (a) cos⁡2γ\cos^{2}\gamma
  2. (b) −cos⁡2γ- \cos^{2}\gammaCorrect answer
  3. (c) sin⁡2γ\sin^{2}\gamma
  4. (d) −sin⁡2γ- \sin^{2}\gamma

Solution.

Answer: (b) −cos⁡2γ- \cos^{2}\gamma

  1. Use cos⁡(α+β)cos⁡(α−β)=cos⁡2α−sin⁡2β=cos⁡2α+cos⁡2β−1\cos(\alpha + \beta)\cos(\alpha - \beta) = \cos^{2}\alpha - \sin^{2}\beta = \cos^{2}\alpha + \cos^{2}\beta - 1.
  2. Direction cosines satisfy cos⁡2α+cos⁡2β+cos⁡2γ=1\cos^{2}\alpha + \cos^{2}\beta + \cos^{2}\gamma = 1.
  3. Therefore the expression is −cos⁡2γ- \cos^{2}\gamma.
