Topic: Trigonometry

Passage · Q44 to Q45

Let 2sin⁡α+cos⁡α=22\sin\alpha + \cos\alpha = 2, where 0<α<90∘0 < \alpha < 90^{\circ}.

Q45

What is 2sin⁡2α+cos⁡2α2\sin 2\alpha + \cos 2\alpha equal to?

  1. (a) 11/1011/10
  2. (b) 11/511/5Correct answer
  3. (c) 12/512/5
  4. (d) 13/513/5

Solution.

Answer: (b) 11/511/5

  1. From 2sin⁡α+cos⁡α=22\sin\alpha + \cos\alpha = 2 and the acute-angle restriction, sin⁡α=3/5\sin\alpha = 3/5 and cos⁡α=4/5\cos\alpha = 4/5.
  2. Thus sin⁡2α=24/25\sin 2\alpha = 24/25 and cos⁡2α=7/25\cos 2\alpha = 7/25.
  3. Therefore 2sin⁡2α+cos⁡2α=48/25+7/25=11/52\sin 2\alpha + \cos 2\alpha = 48/25 + 7/25 = 11/5.
